The Decommissioning Waste Facilities Database has been developed by CODA to improve visibility of waste management pathways across Australia, with a particular focus on supporting planning and efficiency in the oil and gas decommissioning sector. The data have been collated from publicly available sources, including the Australian Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Database (2022) provided by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

The above dashboard is just a sneak peek into the available data. The full version with further data is available to CODA partners in our Partner Portal. View our partnerships page for more information on how to become a CODA partner.
Disclaimers
– While CODA strives for accuracy and thoroughness, the complexity and evolving nature of the waste management industry means that gaps in data and inaccuracies may exist.
– CODA does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the data presented and disclaims liability for any errors or changes that may occur.
– All data is subject to change based on updates to facilities, regulations, and waste management practices.
– The waste types managed by each facility have been estimated based on available information, and while CODA aims to represent key waste streams relevant to oil and gas decommissioning, this is not exhaustive of all types of waste managed by each facility.
– Some facility categories have been adjusted from the DCCEEW database to ensure accessibility for a broader audience, particularly those without specific waste management expertise. Notably, “Management Type” has been renamed “Waste Pathway” and “Infrastructure Type” is referred to as “Facility Type.”
Data Sources
The Decommissioning Waste Facilities Database is built from credible, publicly available sources, including DCCEEW’s Australian waste and resource recovery infrastructure database (2022) and other publicly available industry data from State and Territory regulatory bodies.
Where possible, CODA has mapped the capability and capacity of facilities across 43 distinct waste types pertinent to oil and gas decommissioning. This mapping is based on CODA’s current best assessment and existing knowledge but should not be interpreted as an exhaustive record.
Definitions
– Waste Types: Facilities are categorised based on the types of waste they are licensed to manage, with a specific focus on waste streams relevant to oil and gas decommissioning.
– Waste Pathway: Refers to the waste management process the facility is equipped for, such as recycling, disposal, energy recovery, or treatment.
– Facility Type: The physical infrastructure and technologies in place at a facility to manage waste. Examples include landfills, material recovery facilities (MRFs), composting plants, transfer stations, and energy-from-waste plants.
Exclusions
– Facilities that exclusively manage waste streams unrelated to decommissioning or not relevant to the oil and gas industry.
– Facilities with insufficient publicly available data to reliably assess their capabilities.
