Green Steel of WA Collie

Green Steel’s proposed Collie Green Steel Mill will be Western Australia’s first steel mill as well as the first new steel mill to be constructed in Australia in over 30 years when it begins operation in 2026.

Using well-proven, advanced electric arc furnace technology, the plant will recycle 500,000 tonnes of WA scrap steel (all of which is currently exported or landfilled), converting it into low carbon intensity (green) reinforcing bar or rebar for local consumption.

In doing so, the plant will create for the first time, a true circular economy for steel in WA allowing decommissioned offshore assets to be recycled locally in WA rather than just being dismantled for export. Additionally, the clean and highly efficient plant is expected to abate between 200,000 and 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum compared to existing methods of steel production.
